Pope Benedict XVI's message for the 43rd World Communications Day

The main issue of the article stated by Monsignor Paul Tighe is about modern technologies as a tool for building relationships to promote respect to each and every individual, communicate and build friendship for a more peaceful and joyful world. Though most of the youth today are linked with the modern technology or as they say "born digital" or "digital immigrants", it is a challenge for them how to use this tool as a means to make the world a better place, instead of using modern technology for destruction and harm to others.
The digital technology today made our world a smaller place to live in. Information rapidly transfers from one place to another all around the world. This innovation can help us connect to other people, not just from our country, but from other countries as well in just a click of a button. This innovation can be used to build new relationships and exchange information and other things that can be useful and helpful to us. The modern technology allows us to interact to informations as compared to the past where they were just readers, listeners, and watchers.
However, there are downsides to the modern technologies. It cannot be avoided that these new technologies are abused since our society is vast and highly heterogeneous. Some use modern communication technology as a tool for destruction, some use modern communication technology for spreading false information that can harm the image of others, and some use modern communication technology for spreading immoral images and videos. When modern communication technology is used in this manner, it would create a negative impact to the perception of many people, thinking that modern communication technology is an evil tool in which the world can live without it.
Modern communication technology can also harm ourselves when overused. Nowadays, it is common that the youth spends too much time using modern communication technologies for gaming and chatting. Too much use of these technologies can harm our health and may even interfere with our daily obligations like studying and doing other productive things, or even going to church.
Despite of many negative things that modern communication technologies bring, they can still be heloful to us in terms of making friends with other people who are hard to keep in touch with. Even with people far from us, we can communicate with them, making us feel a little less lonely. not only to us Filipinos, we can also communicate to other people outside the country, sharing ideas and differences between cultures. And the best part of it is that our modern communication technology can help us promote peace and unity around the world.
Modern communication technology truly changed our world into a smaller and better place to live in. Our technology today confirms the saying that "no man is an island". We are all connected in an invisible string, binding us to be closer to one another, building respect and friendship as well as promoting peace and breaking the barrier of distance.
